The Moselle meets the Rhine in Koblenz, a 2,000-year-old city in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley that is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. At the confluence of three rivers, the Teutonic Order built one of its first commanderies in the 13th century, and in the 800s, the enormous Frankish Empire was broken.
- Koblenz Cable Car- When you first arrive in Koblenz, one of the first decisions you need to make is when you’re going to ride the cable car. This takes you up to the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress and across the Rhine. The system is just under 900 meters long, has 18 cars, and can carry more than 7,500 people an hour, which is more than any other cable car in the world.
- Ehrenbreitstein Fortress- Since the eleventh century, a stronghold has protected the steep spur that rises 118 meters above the right bank of the Rhine.
- Upper Middle Rhine Valley- More than 20 castles may be seen on the river in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, which is less than an hour to the south of Koblenz and the town of Bingen. The three primary wine-growing regions in Germany are also traversed by the Rhine Castles Trail. It is a true utopia for walkers and is part of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO Site.
