Deutschlandticket to Increase to €58 Per Month Starting in 2025
Germany’s popular public transport pass, the “Deutschlandticket,” is set to undergo a price increase in the coming years. Currently priced at €49 per month, the pass allows unlimited access to local and regional public transport across the country. However, from the start of 2025, the cost is expected to rise to €58 per month. This decision, made by Germany’s 16 state transport ministers, is aimed at addressing rising operational costs while keeping the ticket accessible to commuters nationwide.
Price Increase for Deutschlandticket
Germany’s widely-used €49 per month public transport pass, the “Deutschlandticket,” is set to experience a price hike starting in 2025. The new cost of the travel pass will be €58 per month, following a decision made by the transport ministers of Germany’s 16 federal states. This €9 increase is aimed at addressing rising costs and ensuring the sustainability of the ticket.
Benefits of the Deutschlandticket
The Deutschlandticket allows users to access local public transport services, including buses, the U-Bahn, trams, and regional trains, throughout the country for a fixed monthly price. The pass is subscription-based, but can be canceled on a monthly basis. For many commuters, especially those in larger cities, it offers a cheaper alternative compared to traditional season tickets.
Launched in May 2023 as a follow-up to the highly popular €9 monthly pass from the summer of 2022, the Deutschlandticket has been credited with increasing the number of public transport users in Germany.
Reasons for the Price Increase
In recent months, local politicians and transport operators have been signaling that a price increase would be necessary to cope with rising inflation and other financial pressures. North Rhine-Westphalia’s transport minister, Oliver Krischer, confirmed that the federal states are committed to maintaining the successful Deutschlandticket model, but a price adjustment is required to ensure long-term financial stability.
Krischer described the increase as “moderate,” adding that the new price still represents a “very favorable offer” for public transport across Germany. While acknowledging that price hikes are never easy, he emphasized that this decision would strengthen the ticket’s financial footing.
Future of the Deutschlandticket
The draft agreement reached by the transport ministers highlights the importance of the price increase as part of a balanced financing concept. The ministers also stressed the need for continued financial support from both federal and state governments to ensure the long-term success of the Deutschlandticket.
