 1. Emergency Alerts for All Phones

Since February 2023, German mobile phones have been equipped to receive emergency alerts. These alerts are loud and accompanied by text messages, even if the phone is on silent. From November 1st, an additional broadcast channel, 919, will be available, ensuring compatibility with older devices. However, it’s important to note that messages on older phones will be broadcast exclusively in German. Users of newer phones will enjoy the added benefit of message translation, but all users must set up the alert function manually.

 2. Simplifying ID Collection

Effective November 1st, Germany is simplifying the process of obtaining ID cards and passports as part of its digitalization initiative. Instead of requiring a physical signature for collection, German residents will receive a “Pin-Brief” confirming the printing of their requested ID. While you still need to collect the ID in person, this eliminates the need for a separate appointment, making the process more efficient. You can now retrieve your ID card at any time using a code at a designated issuing machine.

 3. Farewell to “Hauptsache Gesund” TV Program

“Hauptsache Gesund,” a long-running health program on German public television, will air its final episode on November 30th. The program is making way for changes in ARD’s programming lineup. There’s a possibility that the NDR program “Visite,” focusing on similar health topics, will take its place.

 4. Stradivarius Fashion Chain Arrives in Germany

Fashion enthusiasts, get ready! The popular Spanish clothing brand “Stradivarius” is opening a physical store in Dresden, offering the opportunity to browse their collections in person. An 890-square-meter fashion store is set to open in the Centrum-Galerie, with plans for another shop in the Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier in the coming year. Stradivarius is part of the renowned Inditex Group, which also includes Zara, Bershka, Massimo Dutti, and Pull & Bear.

 5. Maximize Your Tax Advantage

If you’re looking to receive your tax refund earlier, consider applying for the “wage tax reduction” (Lohnsteuerermäßigung). While this application is possible at any time, if you want it to apply retroactively for the entire year 2023, you must submit it to the tax office by November 30th. This will result in higher net income in November and December. You can also apply directly for the income tax reduction for 2024, ensuring reduced monthly tax payments if you meet the requirements. The tax office offers allowances for income-related expenses exceeding €1,830 in 2023.

 6. Germany’s Skilled Worker Law: Part 1

Germany’s new law, designed to attract skilled workers, takes effect with the first stage. Qualified individuals with vocational training or an academic degree can now seek employment without needing a perfect match between their qualifications and the job requirements. Blue Card holders from other EU countries can visit Germany for work-related trips of up to 90 days without a visa. Those who have held a Blue Card in another EU country for at least a year can live and work in Germany without requiring a visa. The salary threshold for receiving a Blue Card is significantly lowered.

 7. Comparing and Changing Car Insurance

Until the end of November, you have the opportunity to cancel or change your existing car insurance. It’s a good idea to reassess your policy if the number of drivers on the policy has changed or if you’ve purchased a new car. However, exercise caution when exploring new insurance offers, as some may not include certain types of coverage, as highlighted by the German Automobile Club.

 8. Increased Earnings for Motor Vehicle Sector Trainees

From November 2023, trainees (Auszubis) in the motor vehicle trade will enjoy a five percent increase in their monthly income, translating to approximately €70 more per month. Germany’s ‘Ausbildung’ system offers a unique opportunity for aspiring workers to gain practical experience while receiving training from an official institute, regardless of their country of origin.

 9. Streaming Service Price Increase

Starting in November, German subscribers to Disney+ will experience changes in their subscription prices. Disney+ will offer consumers three pricing options, catering to different preferences:
