Places to visit near the University
Lübeck is a German city known for its Brick Gothic architecture, which goes back to the Hanseatic League’s heyday as a major commercial confederation in the Middle Ages. The Holstentor, a red-brick city gate that protected the river-bounded Altstadt, is its emblem (old town).
- European Hansemuseum: It is the logical location for a museum dedicated to the Hanseatic League, an international confederation of market cities and merchant guilds. Over half a century, the Hansemuseum charts the origin, growth, and fall of the Hanseatic League.
- Lübeck Cathedral: It is one of the city’s oldest landmarks, having been built by Henry the Lion when Lübeck became an episcopal “see” in the 12th century. It was badly destroyed in 1942, and the rebuilt structure wasn’t consecrated until 1973.
- Burgtor: While maybe overshadowed by the more well-known Holstentor on the ancient western wall, Burgtor is Lübeck’s other preserved gate and well worth a visit. The gate guards the northern gateway to the Altstadt and was built in the Late Gothic style in 1444, right adjacent to the Hansemuseum.
