Zwickau, Saxony, is also referred to as “Automobil- und Robert-Schumann-Stadt” (City of Cars and Robert Schumann). While not quite succinct, the name encompasses two of Zwickau’s strengths: Robert Schumann, a 19th-century composer, was born in Zwickau, and his birthplace now houses an interesting museum about his life and connection with the brilliant pianist Clara Wieck.
- Horch Museum: Located in Zwickau’s old Audi facility, the Horch Museum is an automotive museum dedicated to August Horch, an engineer and automobile pioneer. In 1932, he formed Audi as a merger of four brands: Audi, Horch, Wanderer, and DWK, each of which is now represented by a ring in Audi’s insignia.
- Marienkirche: Zwickau’s cathedral, which dates back to the 1100s, was reconstructed as a spectacular Late Gothic hall church between 1463 and 1565. The Baroque spire was added later after the former Gothic one was damaged by lightning in the 1670s.
