Whenever you take a language proficiency test, you get some scores as a result. Along with these scores, you also get some labels or levels like “beginner” or “advanced”. There are various language proficiency tests across the globe. Almost all tests have a different scoring system. CEFR is one of the most prominent frameworks for describing your proficiency in the language.

What is CEFR?

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, and Assessment is commonly shortened as CEFR, CEFRL, or CEF. It is a framework designed to define the achievements of foreign language learners across Europe and some other countries. This aims to provide a method of learning, teaching, and assessment that applies to all European languages.

Common Reference Levels:

This framework divides learners into 3 broad categories. Each of these 3 categories is also further divided into 2 categories.

Can understand sentences and daily used expressions

B Independent User

Can understand clear standard inputs on familiar matters

C1 Advanced

Can understand a wide range of phrases and long clauses

C2 Mastery

Can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read

How to Know Your Common Reference Levels?

To know your common reference level, you can perform a standardized test. There are various proficiency tests in each European language. For example, TOEFL, IELTS, EF SET, etc. are some standardized tests in the English Language.

CEFR is a valid framework that is actively used by the whole of Europe for admission purposes and immigration purposes. If you are willing to get the common reference level, then you should be well aware of your needs regarding the language. There are various tests available for each European language.
