Hochschulstart Guide for Students

Hochschulstart Guide for Students

Hochschulstart is a centralized organization that coordinates the admission process for higher education institutions in Germany. It includes universities of applied sciences and colleges of art and music. Serving as a platform to apply to these institutions, it helps to ensure a fair & transparent admission process. The courses covered by the organization are for undergraduate degrees only.

The German foundation made up of various committees, Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung [SfH]runs Hochschulstart. The organization is the only way to apply for restricted courses like medicine & pharmacy. Their services are also completely free.

Application Process

The application process for Hochschulstart can vary depending on the institution and program you are applying to. The process is also dependent on whether students reside in the EU/EEA or not.

Non-EU students have to apply to undergraduate courses through either:

  • Uni-assist,
  • the combined application procedure, or
  • directly to the university itself.

There are not many programs available in the English language. That means that non-EU aspirants will not interact with the Hochschulstart application process often. It is mostly the students from the EU/EEA who do. Nevertheless, students can expect the following general steps.

General Steps to Follow

  1. Determine your eligibility: In order to apply through Hochschulstart, you must meet specific eligibility criteria, such as having a qualifying higher school certification from EU/EEA or Switzerland or certification of completion of a German Studienkooleg. You can check the specific requirements for your program on the Hochschulstart website.
  2. Choose your programs: Once you have determined that you are eligible, you can browse the programs offered through Hochschulstart and select the ones you are interested in.
  3. Register with Hochschulstart: Before you can apply, you will need to create a user account on the Hochschulstart website and provide some personal and educational information.
  4. Submit your application: Once registered, you can begin the application process by filling out the online application form and uploading any required documents, such as transcripts or proof of language proficiency.
  5. Wait for a notification: After you have submitted your application, it will be reviewed by the institution(s) you have applied to. You will receive a message from Hochschulstart when a decision has been made.

Please note: The application portal is under maintenance till the 24th of February. Interested applicants can head to the Hochschulstart website to further familiarise themselves with the organization.

If accepted into a program, students must complete the enrollment process and pay any necessary fees before starting their studies. If not accepted, students may have the opportunity to reapply in a future semester or consider applying to a different program.

It is important to keep in mind that the application process for Hochschulstart is competitive, and acceptance is not guaranteed. Researching the programs and institutions carefully and starting the application process as early as possible is a good idea.
