What are the benefits of ECTS credits?

The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) makes degree programs and student performance more transparent and comparable across all European Higher Education Area nations (EHEA). Within Europe, ECTS replaced or supplemented several local (national) standards.

The ECTS credit system enables students from EHEA nations to study abroad and get a degree that is available across the EHEA.

The following are some of the most significant advantages of ECTS for students:

  • You can earn a Bachelor’s degree in one EHEA country and a Master’s degree in another EHEA country as if you were studying in both.
  • You will be able to work in any EHEA country because your education will be easily recognized.
  • If you enroll in a dual degree, a semester abroad, or an Erasmus Plus study experience, your home university will be able to keep track of your study hours using ECTS credits.
  • Academic paperwork that is easier to do
  • It’s easier to gauge the difficulty of a study class, seminar, internship, thesis, or other endeavor based on the number of credits available following completion.
  • In universities, there is less distinction between local and international students.
  • ECTS credits can help you verify your academic achievements even if you drop out of a program, so you don’t have to repeat the same courses.
  • Whatever academic discipline you choose, your degree will have the same number of credits.

Ten notational study hours are equivalent to one credit (= 1 NQF credit) in the South African national credit grading system. Credits are a measurement of a student’s total learning activities, which include contact time, self-study, Work Integrated Learning (WIL) assignments, projects, and examinations. The academic calendar at universities is divided into semesters. Grades are given out at the end of each semester, which normally runs from February to June and July to December.

  • For Certificate, Diploma, Bachelor’s degree, and Bachelor of Honor’s degree, a 30-week full-time academic year is compulsory.
  • A 45-week full-time academic year is known for master’s degree and doctoral qualifications.
  • For Certificates, Diplomas, and Bachelor’s degrees, a minimum credit load of 120 credits each academic year is necessary due to the fact that the typical full-time is equivalent to 40 hours per week.
  • 180 credits per academic year are necessary for Master’s degrees and doctorates.
  • Each course has about 45-minute lectures per week on average. Practicals and tutorials are nearly always mandatory.
