Berlin Braces for the Hottest Day of 2024 as Heatwave Sweeps Across Germany

Summer in Germany isn’t over yet, with temperatures across the country expected to soar into the mid-thirties this week. The German Weather Service (DWD) has forecasted warm weather to persist through the weekend, affecting cities from Munich to Hamburg. So here are the Hottest Day of 2024 as heatwave sweeps across Germany.

High Temperatures Midweek

Wednesday and Thursday are predicted to bring the highest temperatures of the week, with Berlin and Leipzig expecting highs of 35°C, making Thursday the hottest day of 2024 in Berlin so far. Other cities will also experience significant heat, with Frankfurt reaching 34°C, Munich 31°C, and Hamburg, Rostock, Bremen, and Konstanz around 30°C. As the week progresses, temperatures in Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, and Hesse will remain between 30 and 33°C on Friday, while the north will cool down slightly, with Bremen and Hamburg expecting 22°C. Berlin and Dresden will still be warm, at 28°C and 29°C, respectively. The weekend will see a continuation of these patterns, with temperatures around 30°C in the south and a further cooldown in the north and northeast, with Hamburg expecting 22°C and Berlin 24°C on Sunday.

Staying Cool During the Heatwave

As climate change continues to intensify heatwaves in Europe, the German government has issued specific advice on staying cool during these extreme conditions. Recommendations include drinking between two and three liters of water daily, rescheduling intensive activities for cooler times of the day, and wearing head coverings and high-factor sun cream for skin protection outdoors.

For those in Berlin seeking relief from the 35°C heat, visiting one of the city’s outdoor swimming pools might be a better option. Unfortunately, some of Berlin’s favorite natural swimming spots are currently closed due to a larger algae bloom caused by the consistently warm weather. The Berlin State Office for Health and Social Affairs advises against swimming at Strandbad Wannsee, Grunewaldturm, Kleine Badewiese, Breitehorn, Lieper Bucht, Radfahrerwiese, Große Steinlanke, and Alter Hof. Additionally, due to dangerous levels of E.coli bacteria, the department has warned against swimming at the FKK area in Teufelsee.
