Germany to Reinstate Border Checks Starting September 16

Germany to Reinstate Border Checks Starting September 16

Beginning Monday, September 16, Germany will introduce border checks at all of its land borders, including countries that previously did not have such measures in place. These new checks will now affect borders with Denmark, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg. Additionally, Germany will maintain existing checks along its borders with Poland, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, and Austria.

Why Is Germany Reinstating Border Controls?

According to Germany’s Interior Minister, Nancy Faeser, the purpose of these enhanced border controls is to curb migration and strengthen the nation’s defenses against Islamist terrorism and other terrorist crimes. This decision follows increasing pressure on the German government after the far-right’s electoral success in East Germany, as well as several suspected Islamist-related attacks.

Schengen Area and Free Movement

The reintroduction of border checks goes against the usual operation of the Schengen Area, where internal border controls are typically eliminated to allow for visa-free and unrestricted movement across 27 European countries. This includes individuals traveling on a Schengen visa, who usually enjoy free movement within all Schengen member states.

However, given recent security concerns, Germany has deemed these temporary checks necessary to ensure the safety and security of its citizens.
