Lufthansa Extends Flight Suspension to the Middle East Until August 21

German airline group Lufthansa has announced an extension of its suspension of flights to several Middle Eastern destinations due to ongoing regional tensions. The affected destinations include Tel Aviv, Tehran, Beirut, Amman, and Erbil. This suspension will now continue through August 21, surpassing the initial date of August 13. Additionally, Lufthansa has confirmed that it will avoid using Iranian and Iraqi airspace until the new deadline.

Impact on Passengers

Lufthansa has assured affected passengers that they can rebook or cancel their journeys free of charge. The airline expressed regret for the inconvenience caused, emphasizing that the decision is a direct result of the current situation in the region.

Other Airlines Follow Suit

Similarly, Air France and its subsidiary Transavia France have extended their suspension of flights to Beirut, with the new date set for Wednesday, August 14. The suspension, which has been in place since July 29, will remain until further assessments are made regarding the situation on the ground. Despite the suspension, Air France continues to operate flights to Tel Aviv.

Other international airlines have also adjusted their flight schedules in response to the heightened tensions.

Escalating Tensions in the Region

The decision by airlines to suspend or adjust flight schedules comes amid increasing tensions in the Middle East. Iran and its allies have vowed to retaliate following the recent high-profile killings of Hezbollah’s top military commander Fuad Shukr in Lebanon and Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran. Both incidents have been attributed to Israel.

Hezbollah has been engaging in near-daily exchanges of fire with Israeli forces across the Lebanon-Israel border. In response to these developments, leaders of France, Germany, and Britain issued a joint statement on Monday, urging a ceasefire in Gaza and warning Iran and its allies against further escalation of the conflict.
