Durga Puja (October 9th-13th)

Durga Puja, celebrating Durga, an aspect of the Hindu mother goddess Mahadevi, is a significant event for the Bengali community. The festival was recognized as part of UNESCO’s “Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity” in 2021. Here’s a glimpse of where you can join in the celebrations across Germany:

    • Cologne: Known for one of Europe’s largest Durga Puja celebrations, the event is hosted by the Indischer Kulturverein from October 9th to 13th at Bezirksrathaus in the Chorweiler suburb. Guests are encouraged to make a €15 donation per adult per day, which includes Darshan, Aarti, Prasad, lunch, and dinner.
    • Düsseldorf: Celebrations also take place here. Details can be found on the event website.
    • Frankfurt: The Rhein-Main Bengali Cultural Association will host celebrations from October 9th to 11th, starting each day at 11 am.
    • Berlin: Berliner Bengalis are organizing daily Durga Puja events, beginning with cultural programs at 10:00 am and ending with prasad at 8:00 pm.
    • Munich: The Indo-German Cultural Association is organizing free Durga Puja events from October 10th to 13th. Registration is required.

Diwali (October 31st)

Diwali, the five-day Festival of Lights, signifies the triumph of light over darkness, and good over evil. Here’s where you can celebrate Diwali across Germany:

    • Düsseldorf: The Diwali festivities begin on October 27th with a dinner hosted by the Bihar Fraternity.
    • Cologne: On November 2nd, Cologne will host the Diwali Mela party, lasting from 6 pm to 4 am. The event includes music acts, Bollywood dance shows, and acrobatics, with tickets priced at €15. The Indian Students Association of Bonn-Cologne is also organizing an event with cultural performances, games, and food on the same day.
    • Berlin: Sage Beach will be the location for the Indian festival of lights on November 2nd. On November 3rd, from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm, a public celebration will take place at the Sri Ganesha Hindi Temple with live music, dance, and snacks.
    • Munich: Diwali Bollywood Night, filled with music, dance, and food, will take place on October 26th, followed by a 4D (Diwali, Dandiya, DJ, Dhamaka) party on November 9th, costing €12.
    • Bremen: A Navratri & Diwali Fest is planned for November 2nd from 5:00 pm.
