October 2024 brings several important changes to Germany, including public holidays, new regulations, and financial support updates. Here’s what you need to know:
1) German Public Holidays
The month begins with Tag der Deutschen Einheit (Day of German Reunification) on October 3rd, marking the 1990 reunification of East and West Germany after the fall of the Berlin Wall. This nationwide public holiday will see most businesses, schools, and shops closed.
Later in the month, October 31st marks Reformation Day, a regional public holiday in several Protestant states such as Brandenburg, Saxony, and Bremen.
2) Autumn School Holidays
School pupils in Germany can look forward to their Herbstferien (autumn break), though the exact dates vary by state. For example, pupils in North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse begin their holiday on October 14th, while those in Berlin and Hamburg start on October 21st. In Bremen and Lower Saxony, autumn break begins October 4th, while students in Bavaria get a shorter break starting October 28th.
3) New Regulations for Winter Tyres
In Germany, it’s mandatory to use winter tyres in wintry conditions like frost or snow. A key change this year is that from October 1st, only tyres with the Alpine symbol are allowed in winter weather. Previously, tyres with the M+S symbol were also acceptable if they were manufactured before January 1st, 2018.
4) Financial Aid Increases for Students
Students in need of financial support will see an increase in BAföG funding starting this winter semester. The basic needs allowance will rise from €452 to €475, and the housing allowance will increase from €360 to €380. The maximum funding available will now be €992, an increase of €58. Additionally, students from low-income households can receive a one-time start-up grant of €1,000.
5) Clocks Go Back One Hour
As winter approaches, clocks will go back one hour at 3 a.m. on October 27th, giving an extra hour of sleep. Despite discussions of abolishing the seasonal time changes in the EU, it will continue this year.
6) Berlin-Paris Night Trains Return
After being suspended in August for construction, the Berlin-Paris night train service is set to resume on October 28th. This service is operated jointly by Deutsche Bahn, SNCF, and Austrian operator ÖBB.
7) New Driving Test Questions
From October 1st, new questions will be added to Germany’s driving theory test. The question catalogue is updated twice a year, so it’s essential for learners to stay informed.
8) Game Fair in Essen
The popular Spiel 24 trade fair for board games will take place in Essen from October 3rd to October 6th. It will feature more than 850 exhibitors from around the world presenting the latest in board, card, and dice games.
9) Halloween in Germany
Though Halloween in Germany isn’t as widespread as in the US, you can still expect some celebrations. Stock up on treats for potential trick-or-treaters, or you might get a “saures” (a trick) from disappointed youngsters.
