How to Prepare for Travel Under Europe’s New EES and ETIAS Rules?

How to Prepare for Travel Under Europe’s New EES and ETIAS Rules?

With recent delays, there is now a confirmed start date for significant changes in EU travel rules. If you’re planning a trip, here’s what you need to know about the new Entry/Exit System (EES) and the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) rules, set to take effect soon.

Travelling Before November 9th, 2024

For those traveling before November 10th, 2024, no new changes apply. You can proceed with your trip as usual without needing to comply with any new requirements.

Travelling Between November 10th, 2024, and May 2025

The EES will be implemented starting November 10th, 2024. However, the ETIAS, the second change in the system, will be rolled out six months later, around May 2025. Here’s what travelers need to know for trips during this period:

What is EES?

The EES is a more secure screening process for passports at the external borders of the EU and Schengen areas. While immigration rules, such as the 90-day visa-free stay, remain unchanged, EES makes it easier to enforce these rules. Passengers will need to complete a pre-registration process providing personal details (such as name and date of birth) and biometric data (fingerprints and a facial scan). This pre-registration only needs to be done once, with subsequent trips requiring only a passport scan.

How to Prepare for EES?

Although the pre-registration process happens in person at the airport, travelers should be aware of the following:

    • Read all travel provider emails carefully to ensure you’ve provided all required information (e.g., passport details).
    • Know what to expect at the airport or station, as different locations may have varied processes.
    • Plan to arrive early to allow time for the new formalities, especially if it’s your first time crossing an EU/Schengen external border under the new system.

Who is Exempt?

EES pre-registration requirements do not apply to:

    • Citizens of EU/EEA countries (including dual nationals traveling with their EU/EEA passport).
    • Non-EU citizens with residency in an EU/EEA country or a visa for an EU/EEA country.

Travelling After May 2025

After EES is fully implemented, ETIAS will come into play, introducing changes that affect non-EU citizens traveling for short stays in the EU.

What is ETIAS?

ETIAS is an electronic visa waiver system similar to the USA’s ESTA. It applies to non-EU citizens who don’t require a visa for short stays in the EU (up to 90 days). Travelers must fill out an online form, pay a €7 fee (exempt for those under 18 or over 70), and wait for their application to be processed.

How to Prepare for ETIAS?

You can prepare for ETIAS in advance by:

    • Filling out the ETIAS application online at least 72 hours before your trip.
    • Avoiding scam websites by completing the application through the official site. Once approved, the visa waiver is valid for three years, so frequent travelers won’t need to apply each time they travel.

Who is Exempt?

ETIAS applies primarily to tourists. Exemptions include:

    • Citizens of EU/EEA countries.
    • Non-EU citizens with an EU/EEA residency permit or visa.

By following these guidelines, you can be well-prepared for the new travel rules under EES and ETIAS. Ensure you stay updated on any further changes or delays from the European Commission.
