New Daytime High-Speed Train Service Between Berlin and Paris to Launch in December
New Daytime High-Speed Train Service Between Berlin and Paris to Launch in December
Starting mid-December, a new high-speed daytime train service will connect the capitals of Germany and France, Berlin and Paris. This comes as an addition to the existing night train service launched at the end of 2023. For the first time, passengers will be able to travel directly during the day between these two cities, significantly reducing travel time without the need to spend a night on board.
Service Details
According to a joint press release by Deutsche Bahn (DB) and the French rail operator SNCF, the service will commence on December 16th, 2024. It will offer an eight-hour journey between the two capitals, linking them from city center to city center at high speed.
The new daytime service will be operated by the German high-speed train, the ICE, which has 444 seats per train, including 111 in first class. These trains are capable of reaching speeds of up to 320 km/h on the French high-speed sections of the route. The train will stop at several major stations including Strasbourg, Karlsruhe, and Frankfurt South.
Schedule and Fares
The service will run once daily. The train will depart from Paris Gare de l’Est at 9:55 am, arriving in Berlin Hauptbahnhof at 6:03 pm. In the opposite direction, the train will leave Berlin at 11:54 am and arrive in Paris at 7:55 pm. The fares will start at €59 for standard class and €69 for first class. Passengers will be able to make reservations starting from October 16th, 2024.
Other Direct Routes
This new service adds to the existing collaboration between DB and SNCF, which has operated the German-French high-speed rail service since June 2007. Current routes include lines from Frankfurt and Stuttgart to Paris, with extensions to Munich and Marseille. A night train route between Berlin and Paris, operated by the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB), was also introduced in December 2023 but is currently suspended due to construction work. It is expected to resume on October 28th, 2024.
This new direct service between Berlin and Paris represents a significant development in the cooperation between German and French rail operators, offering travelers a fast and efficient daytime connection between two of Europe’s major capitals.
