IELTS and TOEFL scores are mandatory if you are planning to study abroad at any prestigious university. But certain universities require an IELTS score for admission whereas some require a TOEFL score. So there is always a burning question from students who want to apply to both kinds of universities. Are TOEFL and IELTS scores comparable? Is TOEFL IELTS score conversion even possible? Is there any converter for the TOEFL IELTS score?

IELTS vs TOEFL Scores: How do they Differ

To access the English Proficiency of a person IELTS and TOEFL tests are used. Both measures your skills in four primary fields of language listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

The scoring scales of both examinations differ greatly, even though both are meant to assess skill levels. On the TOEFL, the test taker receives a score out of 120. Each skill is graded out of 30. For Example, If I have scored 29 in listening, 24 in reading, 29 in writing, and 25 in speaking then my total score will be 29+24+29+25= 107. For students trying to get admission in German Universities TOEFL score of 60-80 is considered as a good score.

On the IELTS test person gets 4 different band scores ranging from 0-9. The total IELTS score is the average of these scores. So for example, If I have scored 8 in listening, 8 in writing, 7 in speaking, and 7 in reading then my final band score will be (8+8+7+7)/4= 7.5. German universities usually accept scores between 4.5 and 6.5. So 6 is considered as a good score for getting admission in German University.

Unfortunately, there is no official TOEFL IELTS conversion system because different organizations conduct these tests. In fact, there is a lot of difference in the pattern of questions in both tests. Luckily, though the creators of TOEFL, ETS has published a TOEFL IELTS conversion estimate on their website.
