Places to visit near the University

Amberg is a German town in the state of Bavaria. It’s about midway between Regensburg and Bayreuth in the Upper Palatinate. In 2020, the town had a population of over 42,000 inhabitants and a beautiful place to explore.

  1. Steinerne Stadt: This karst rock labyrinth in Steinerne Stadt is completely overpowering. When you walk through the alleyways, squares, and streets carved into the rock by water and wind over the ages, it’s easy to see how the name came to be.
  2. Vogelherdgrotte: Near Krottensee, the Vogelherdgrotte is a magnificent karst cave. It is made up of Frankendolomit (Malm). The cave is heavily used for recreational purposes.
  3. Stadtbrille (Amberg): The building’s arches seem to resemble glasses when reflected in the Vils’ waters. Perhaps this is why the watergate is dubbed “city glasses” by locals. The earliest structure documented in 1454 is 46 meters long and crosses the Vils, making it one of Amberg’s attractions.
