Two ways of studying nursing in Germany –

You can choose two of the following options to complete your Nursing Bachelor’s degree.

Minimum eligibility criteria to do an Ausbildung:

Like any other degree from an institution of higher learning, Ausbildung has some minimum requirements for eligibility, which are as follows:

    1. Passing marks in 10th Grade
    2. German language (at least B2 level)
    3. Recognition of school leaving certificate
    4. Proof of sufficient funds (as of march 21, 861 euros per month) ** you do not need to show a blocked account if your stipend is more than 861 euros**
    5. Proof of German health insurance and proof of accommodation

Duration of the course:

    • The Ausbildung course lasts for three years, and the work placement and classroom teaching method will continue for three years.
    • Students must spend 2500 hours of practical training and 2100 hours of theoretical knowledge. 
    • Theoretical knowledge takes place at a nursing school called Pflegeschule
    • Practical training takes place at a training company called Ausbildungsbetrieb, training companies here are hospitals, heal care centers, old age homes, etc.
    • In the final year, students have to choose their specialization in a particular field, General Nursing, Pediatric Nursing, or Geriatric Nursing. After 2 years an intermediate exam is conducted. If you fail this exam, you can either continue with the training or switch to less responsible nursing helper training.
 Practical lessons at vocational schools:

Vocational schools teach some practical lessons. The following topics are covered in practical  lessons at vocational schools:

    • Body care
    • Prevention
    • General Wound Care
    • Administration of medication
Requirements for internships:

Students must do internships in all departments, including:

    • Surgery
    • Orthopedics
    • General Internal Medicine
    • Geriatric
    • Obstetrics (women doctor)
    • Neurology
    • Pediatrics
    • Psychiatric
    • Maternity and newborn care
    • Ambulatory care
Cost of the course:

Ausbildung nursing course is a state-controlled program, and no tuition fees are charged for the program by the employer and the institution.

Additional courses:

Nurses can complete additional coursework to specialize in the following areas after completing the required three years of education:

    • Anesthesia and intensive care
    • Operations and endoscopy service
    • Oncology
    • Clinical geriatrics
    • Rehabilitation and long-term care

Higher studies after Ausbildung:

For higher studies, you need to get a company training contract first. If you want to specialize in a particular field within nursing like nursing supervisor, ward manager, health and social service specialist, business economist, etc. You can do Weiterbildung (short-term certification courses) or Fortbildung (improves skills related to a specific field).

Ausbildung Average salary:

The following stipends are available to you while you are a student:

    • Year 1 – 1160 euros
    • Year 2 – 1225 euros
    • Year 3 – 1330 euros
After Ausbildung Salary:

Higher qualification can always give you more salary which depends on the sector you work in i.e., private or public sector. Following is the list of stipends:

    • Geriatric Nursing Salary – approx. 2500 euros (gross salary)
    • Pediatric Nursing Salary – approx. 2850 euros
    • General Nursing Salary – approx. 2800 euros

Dual Study Program Requirements:

Additionally, students have the option of earning a Dual Degree while studying in Germany. The prerequisites for a dual degree in Germany are as follows:

    1. Direct University Entrance Qualification (achieved through studienkolleg)
    2. Find training companies
    3. This study program is divided into block manner – the study is divided into time blocks each lasting 3 months – (a) First 3 months attend the university, (b) Next 3 months attend training company.

 Universities for B.Sc. in Nursing in Germany:

The universities listed below are some of your options for earning your B.Sc. in Nursing degree.

    1. Nursing (B.Sc.) Dual
    2. 8 semesters (vocational schools and a clinic/ care facility)
    3. Start of Semester: Winter Semester
    4. Language: German
    5. Placement Test: There is a mandatory placement test in English at the beginning of the study program.
    6. Your secondary school diploma or university degree must be recognized as entitling you to admission to a Bachelor’s or Master’s program.
    7. Proof of German language proficiency
    8. Also, certain degree programs have further specific admission requirements: (a) Practical professional experience before commencing studies (vocational placement); (b) a Three-year vocational training program before commencing studies (e.g. for degree programs in the care/health sector).
    9. Application deadlines for the winter semester 2022/23 when applying with uni-assist: (a) For all applicants with school/university diplomas from countries outside of Germany; (b) From March 1, until June 15, 2022 (a receipt of application documents at uni-assist)
    10. Application deadlines for the summer semester of 2023 when applying with uni-assist: (a) For all applicants with school/university diplomas from countries outside of Germany; (b) From September 1, until December 15, 2022 (a receipt of application documents at uni-assist).
  • FH Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences:

      1. Public University
      2. Nursing (B.Sc.) training integrated course
      3. Start of study: winter semester
      4. Duration: 8 semesters
      5. Semester fee: 318.64 euros
      6. Language: German (Proof of German language skills)
      7. Application is made via uni-assist.
      8. Application Deadline: (a) October 1st – November 15th for the summer semester; (b) April 1st – May 15th for the winter semester.

    3. Successful graduates will gain two qualifications at the end of the program: (a)  Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) as their academic degree; (b) State registered qualification as a nurse/nursing care specialist.

    5. Duration: 7 Semesters
    6. Application Deadline: Winter Semester – April 25 to July 15
    7. Applications for this program must be submitted to Tübingen University: Application process via the University of Tübingen website.

Study Variant(s): Study variant 1: Full-time study in attendance with placement in the 3rd semester through recognition of completed nursing training Study variant.; 2: Two-year contact study (24 credit points) during the last two years of nursing training; after completing your training, entry into the 4th semester of study variant 1 (full-time study in attendance)
    4. Study Form: Contact study; Full-time study (a) Full-time study: With the recognition of nursing training, you are placed in the third semester, so that your studies begin with this and the last four semesters. (b) Contact studies: 4 semesters. After successful participation, the 4th, 5th and 6th semesters of full-time study take place.
    5. Normal Period: Full-time study: 6 semesters; Contact study: 7 semesters.

    3. Duration: 6 semesters
    4. Application period: (a) Winter semester: (start – October 01) Application: beginning (June to July 15); (b) Summer semester: (start – April 01) Application: beginning (December to January 15)
    5. Language: German
    6. Admission requirements: Higher education entrance qualification: The required higher education entrance qualification is either an “Abitur” (general university entry qualification) or “Fachabitur” (specialist entry qualification for the university of applied sciences). If you have a different school leaving certificate, you can apply in accordance with Section 11 of the Berlin Higher Education Act (Berliner Hochschulgesetz – BerlHG) subject to certain conditions (this applies e.g. for nurses, a requirement is 3 years of professional experience after completing training).
    7. Vocational Training: As an applicant with a Fach(Abitur), you also require a completed three-year vocational training program in one of the state-accredited nursing or healthcare professions listed below for admission to study Healthcare and Nursing Management.
