The West Coast University of Applied Sciences was created in 1993 on the initiative of forward-thinking regional business people and politicians. It began operations in a leased space and graduated its first students in 1997. It is a public university situated in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein, in the city of Heide. There are now 1900 students enrolled, with international students accounting for 3% of the total.

Heide is a town in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein. It is the seat of the Dithmarschen Kreis (district). Heide is a German term that means “heath.” Four neighboring villages chose to erect a church in the “middle of the heath” in the 15th century. With 4.7 hectares, Heide possesses Germany’s largest undeveloped market square. It contains around 500 parking spots and is largely utilized as a parking lot.
- Gottorf Castle: It is a castle and estate in the city of Schleswig in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein. It is one of Schleswig-most Holstein’s most notable secular structures, having been restored and enlarged multiple times during its eight-hundred-year history, transforming from a medieval castle to a Renaissance fortification to a Baroque castle.
- The Kugelbake: It is a historic navigational aid in Cuxhaven, Germany, near the northernmost tip of Lower Saxony, where the Elbe empties into the North Sea. The term bake was used in the Middle Ages to denote all navigational aids, including lighthouses, in the Low German dialect.
- Festung Grauerort: The Grauerort stronghold, located 9 kilometers north of Stade on the Elbe River, was erected between 1869 and 1879 to guard Hamburg’s port. Its hexagonal shape makes use of the area’s terrain and the placement of the old levee, and it’s also a lovely site to explore.
In Schleswig-Holstein, the West Coast University of Applied Sciences is a new and contemporary public university. In 2004, it began the transition to the new degree courses “Bachelor’s” and “Master’s.” As a result, we became the first university in Schleswig-Holstein to complete the Bologna Process. At the same time, the FHW pushed for increased internationalization: our institution now has contacts with almost 20 universities on all continents, giving it a strong worldwide position. This is mostly beneficial to students, but it also benefits the West Coast area.
