Requirements for Ausbildung in Germany

Ausbildung, or apprenticeship, is a vocational training program in Germany. In our last post ‘Ausbildung in Germany: Everything You Need to Know,’ we gave you a basic overview of ausbildung. Today, you can find out about the credentials required in detail.

1. Language Requirements

Germany has no formal education requirements for ausbildung. The main requirement is that the applicants should be able to speak, comprehend, and write the German language. Though there are several businesses that have stringent requirements for language certifications. Foreign nationals vying for a spot in an apprenticeship program also need to submit a language certificate to the embassy.

Having at least an A2 level of proficiency is crucial. The good part is, it is relatively easy to get to this level. Some students, depending on their chosen course, may require a B1 or B2 level proficiency certification.

2. Academic Requirements

Completing 11th or 12th grade is mostly sufficient. Some courses can also be qualified with a 9th or 10th grade qualification. If you are planning to do a vocational course in Germany, it is advised to make an effort in your studies.

3. Important Paperwork

Applying for the Ausbildung in Germany requires only a few documents if you’re a German citizen.

  • Anschreiben (an application where you should show your motivation and strengths), a Resume or CV, and your academic documents are sufficient for the Ausbildung application. Your CV should be in Europass format. You can do that on their official website here.
  • For foreign nationals or foreigners living outside of Germany, an embassy in your home country may require additional paperwork.
  • In most cases, an embassy will require you to provide 10 to 12 documents. You can obtain a comprehensive list of the documents required for application submission from the German embassy in your country.
  • Your application for the Ausbildung should be imaginative. Don’t steal someone else’s writing and try to express your own thoughts. Always remember that honesty is the best policy.

4. Age Limits

The age limit for different kinds of ausbildung courses differs greatly. For foreigners who are entering the program, applicants should be 18 years old or above. Mostly, people between the ages of 15 to 25 apply for ausbildung.
